Audi starts testing new R18 e-tron

A week after the World Championship winning Audi R18 e-tron quattro car's last run in a race, its successor is ready to hit the track. The new LMP1 sports car, which has been kept under wraps up to now, have commenced testing on the US track of Sebring in Florida. Audi Sport has developed a new Le Mans prototype that corresponds to the Technical Regulations for 2014 and is designed for maximum efficiency. The development started in 2012. The next-generation Audi R18 e-tron quattro is now being tested on the race track where all new Le Mans prototypes of the Audi brand have had to prove their worth. "We've reached a crucial stage in this project," said Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. "After building the first prototype, testing on various race tracks is now taking centre-stage. The tests are mainly focused on achieving high mileage, co-ordinating the highly complex hybrid drive systems and working out an efficiency optimised total package that has never before been as complex as this one."

Twitter to be available on mobile phones without Internet

Twitter Inc is tying up with a Singapore-based start-up to make its 140-character messaging service available to users in emerging markets who have entry-level mobile phones which cannot access the Internet. U2opia Mobile, which has a similar tie-up with Facebook Inc, will launch its Twitter service in the first quarter of next year, Chief Executive and Co-founder Sumesh Menon told Reuters. Users will need to dial a simple code to get a feed of the popular trending topics on Twitter, he said. More than 11 million people use U2opia's Fonetwish service, which helps access Facebook and Google Talk on mobile without a data connection. Twitter, which boasts of about 230 million users, held a successful initial public offering last month that valued the company at around $25 billion. U2opia uses a telecom protocol named USSD, or Unstructured Supplementary Service Data, which does not allow viewing of pictures, videos or other graphics. "USSD as a vehicle for Twitter is almost hand in glove because Twitter has by design a character limit, it's a very text-driven social network," Menon said. Eight out of 10 people in emerging markets are still not accessing data on their phone, he said.

Apple begins selling new iPad Mini with Retina display

Amid reports of manufacturing issues that could limit the supply, Apple (AAPL) began selling its newest iPad Mini on Tuesday, less than two weeks after its latest full-sized iPad debuted in the United States. The technology giant's second attempt at a smaller tablet device -- the iPad Mini measures 7.9 inches diagonally while the full-sized version checks in at 9.7 inches -- is the first to include Apple's high-definition screen, known as a Retina display. The device appeared on Apple's website for sale Tuesday morning, joining the recently released iPad Air.
The iPad Mini has two other noticeable differences from its predecessor besides the display: its chip and price tag. Like the newest iPhones and full-sized iPad, the iPad Mini has Apple's new 64-bit A7 chip, which is more power-efficient and faster. It also is more expensive than the earlier model, which started at $329; the iPad Mini with Retina display starts at $399 and costs as much as $829 for a model with cellular connectivity and 128 GB of storage. The original iPad Mini has been discounted, with prices starting at $299. The device is available in silver or space gray colors, and can be purchased on Apple's website for shipping or pickup at an Apple store. Wireless carriers AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile are also selling the device.
